Google is refreshing Google Play in vehicles with Google built-in, bringing a more adaptable store interface and new entertainment options to the dashboard. The company announced the changes on October 13, with an automatic rollout planned over the following weeks.
A store designed around the dashboard
The redesigned homepage highlights apps and useful details, while curated collections separate activities suited to driving from those intended for parked time. The layout adjusts to different display shapes and orientations. Google says the in-car catalogue now includes more than 700 apps, with STARZ, Firefox, Ludo King and JioHotstar among the additions.
YouTube moves from video to audio
The handoff requires a YouTube Premium subscription. Starting with YouTube, video watched while parked can continue as background audio when the vehicle enters drive. These announcements concern cars with Google built-in; they should not be read as a promise that every phone-connected dashboard has the same features.
What to check before your next journey
For streaming fans, the useful question is whether a particular car supports the service they actually use. Look at the store available on your vehicle and check the app requirements before planning a viewing session during a charging stop. A redesigned store does not itself settle questions about your account, subscription or connection.
Keep video viewing for parked time and use suitable audio controls when travelling. If you share a vehicle, it is also sensible to review which account is signed into an entertainment app. A personal recommendation feed can be helpful, but choosing the right account keeps a shared dashboard easier to manage.
